Scheduling Fire Station Tours
and other Public Education Requests
Information for scheduling:
- A 2-week advance notice is required
- Monday’s are reserved for mandatory maintenance tasks, so no requests are facilitated on that day.
- Group size can be from 6 – 20 people. All ages are welcome, however, toddler groups under 4 years of age are quick to lose interest and an educational visit to the pre-school or daycare might be a better use of the group’s time.
- Safety talks are given to schools, scout groups, church groups, retirement centers and other organized community meetings.
- Safety topics include fire and life safety, water safety, and seasonal topics.
- Fire crews will participate in organized block parties, health and safety fairs, and other non-profit community events.
- Fire crews are in-service (responding to calls) during these events and may be required to leave for a call, or may not arrive as scheduled due to a call. Please keep this in mind when scheduling.
Fire crews will not participate in birthday parties, business grand openings and business marketing events.

Crawl Low Under Smoke
Clovis Firefighters can remove smoke from a building with special tools that are on the fire engine, but they want you to know that if a fire occurs:
- Stay low and crawl under smoke to the nearest exit
- Never breathe in smoke
- Once outside, stay outside
Kitchen Safety
Clovis Firefighters Darryl Turney and Fred Edwards love to cook. They know the importance of staying safe in the kitchen:
- Keep stove clean and free of clutter
- Turn pot handles towards the center of the stove. Small children can bump or grab a pot handle
- Set a timer to remind you a pot is on the stove
- Never leave your cooking unattended
Two Ways Out
Clovis Fire Department Captain Jim Stemler knows the importance of knowing two ways out of every room in case of fire. If your smoke alarm goes off:
- Check the door with the back of your hand
- If the door is hot, then you must go out your 2nd exit
- If you are on the ground floor, you can crawl out of the window
- If you are on the 2nd floor and do not have an escape ladder, then open the window and wave a blanket to alert firefighters
